Hi! Thanks for being here. The Oscars are a week away and this is the first year in ages that I will have seen all of the nominees for Best Picture. (We only have one left: Zone of Interest). It started as an accident when we realized we’d already seen many of the movies and that trying to watch them all would be an attainable goal. It’s a satisfying accomplishment that didn’t require an enormous effort, and the reward is just being able to understand the cultural references and/or root for your favorites on the night. More than anything, it was a goal that had clear objectives and a deadline, making it easier to achieve. Yay for attainable goals! Here’s what else I’ve been watching and reading.
🥕 We went to see the French movie The Taste of Things at the theater. It’s the ideal foreign film experience because there isn’t a ton of dialogue, and it’s very pretty and peaceful to watch. Set in a manor in the French countryside over a century ago, it revolves around cooking elaborate meals in a large, beautiful kitchen. There are long lingering shots of food being prepared, making it feel like a meditative experience. At the heart of the movie, there is a romance between two people who hold their passion for food above all else. Plus, I’d very much like to try baked Alaska now.
🦥 I just finished reading Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee, a book that came out a few years ago but feels more timely than ever. I came across a TikTok of someone who had just read it and thought “This is exactly the book that I need to revisit right now.” (I feel compelled to share that I work for the publisher for full transparency). I’ve been juggling a lot over the past few months—planning a wedding and launching a podcast to name a few—and frankly, I was drowning. Doing the most while simultaneously feeling like I was never doing enough. This book shifted a lot of things into a healthier perspective for me.
💑 I slept on the Max show The Sex Lives of College Girls because I didn’t think it was ~for me~. It centers around a group of four college freshmen who are complete opposites but form an unlikely bond when they get placed together in their college dorm. What a funny, charming show! I binged seasons 1 and 2 and now am eagerly anticipating the next season.
🤳 Lastly, this TikTok. Shout out to all the nonnas just trying their best to understand vegetarianism.
